In the summer of 2018, the City contracted with the consulting firm Dewberry Engineers, Inc. to provide professional services for improving sections of the Lake Johnson Loop Trail. The consultant is scheduled to present preliminary construction plans for review by the City in Fall 2019. The final determination of which sections to be paved will be dependent on final construction cost and available funding. The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department will schedule a public information meeting this summer during the West District Citizens Advisory Council (CAC) meeting to review and comment on proposed design plans to repave and improve portions of the Lake Johnson Loop Trail. Public notices and information signs will be posted along the trail to inform the public of the meeting schedule.

The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department advertised the construction bid for the Lake Johnson Loop Trail Repaving and Improvement Project on May 7, 2020. Five bids were received and opened on June 9, 2020. The lowest, most responsive, responsible bidder was State Contracting, Inc. 

Construction will begin September 2020 and will close this section of trail anticipated to re-open in Spring 2021. During this time, the paved trail located on the south side of Lake Johnson, between the dam and the Lake Johnson Waterfront Center, will remain open as will the entire unpaved West Loop Trail.

In order to make these improvements, tree removal along this segment is proposed. Staff has coordinated this project with Urban Forestry staff for compliance with City code and policy. Development and maintenance along the Capital Area Greenway system come with varying degrees of disturbance, however, staff works hard to balance the protection/conservation of trees while providing safe and quality amenities to our citizens. Urban Forestry staff will work with the contractor to help make adjustments, alterations and ensure compliance throughout the project.
