Raleigh Water Crew Helps Hurricane-Devastated Western North Carolina

A public utility crew brings relief to the hurricane-ravaged western part of the state

In a swift response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, Raleigh Water staff are mobilizing to assist the hard-hit western part of North Carolina. The region's water infrastructure, particularly in Asheville, has been severely damaged, leaving tens of thousands without access to clean water.

A convoy of four vehicles, including three dump trucks and a pickup truck, was loaded with essential supplies, including 50 tons of pipes, on Tuesday morning, to help repair and restore the damaged water system. Five Raleigh Water employees are part of this first wave of the relief effort, traveling to Asheville to assist with the restoration process.

“This is a critical time for our neighbors in the Western part of our state,” said Raleigh Water Director Whit Wheeler. “Raleigh is working closely with our water utility mutual aid partnership, NCWaterWarn, to mobilize resources and help restore the water infrastructure necessary to get them back on their feet."

As the situation continues to evolve, Raleigh Water leaders are coordinating with local, state, and federal authorities to determine additional needs and potentially deploy more crews and resources. The City's commitment to helping its neighbors in times of crisis is unwavering, and this rapid response is a testament to that dedication.
