Raleigh Transportation Moves Bike and Pedestrian Projects Forward

New bikeway connections and enhancements to existing bike and pedestrian infrastructure include the addition of buffered bike lanes, traffic calming on streets with existing bike lanes and school zone neighborhood bikeways, and the addition of sidewalks and raised crosswalks that connect directly to schools.   

The Bike and Pedestrian Program has several projects under construction and projects that will be completed in 2024 and 2025. Six of these projects can be found in school zones: 

• Enhanced bike lanes at Country Trail 
• Enhanced bike lanes and pedestrian crossing at Dixie Trail 
• Traffic calming and neighborhood bikeway enhancements at Bertie Drive 
• Traffic calming and neighborhood bikeway enhancements at Cooper Road 
• Traffic calming and sidewalk connections at Wild Wood Forest Drive 
• Buffered bike lanes and raised crosswalks at Saint Mary’s Street 

In addition to school zone projects, neighborhood bikeway connections are underway to connect into greenways along White Oak Road, Mackinac Island Lanes, and Cooper Road.  

The Bike and Pedestrian Program has partnered with the Neighborhood Traffic Management Program and the City’s Annual Resurfacing Program to deliver several of these projects: 

• Buffered bike lanes on Willow Oak Road, connecting the neighborhood to their community center 
• Cycle-track on Donald Ross Drive, a wide neighborhood street, to help calm traffic and connect to the future New Bern BRT system 
• Neighborhood bikeways along Quail Ridge Road, Sierra Drive, Jacqueline Lane, Latimer Road, Marthonna Way, and Shannon Street
