Raleigh Firefighters Recognize a Community Hero

Firefighters visit injured lifeguard who hopes to be a firefighter one day

Youssef Bounagui wasn’t expecting visitors, but he says the surprise visit was just what he needed.

“It made my week. Honestly, it was amazing that they took the time to come see me,” Bounagui said. “It’s been hard, but their visit really motivated me. It was just what I needed.”

The 19-year old has been at WakeMed since last week. A lifeguard, Bounagui is recovering after suffering head and  spinal injuries while saving a 7-year old from drowning.

Raleigh firefighters got word of his heroic act and found out his goal is to one day become a firefighter.

As Chaplain and Senior Firefighter Jeff Neal put it, “We heard the call.”

Neal and other firefighters didn’t waste any time getting over to the hospital. They wanted to not only thank Bounagui for his heroism, but also let him know the community is rallying around him.

“To walk in and see his smile, he is just an inspiration,” said Neal. “We offered him encouragement. My prayer is that he heals and he can fulfill all his dreams. This kid is a fighter.”
