Worthdale Park Stream Restoration and Stormwater Improvements

Stream Restoration and Green Stormwater Infrastructure

The City is implementing a water quality improvement project in Worthdale Park that include the restoration of three (3) stream reaches within the park and to add riparian wetland cells to help treat stormwater runoff. The stream restoration and wetland cells will help improve water quality in the Walnut Creek watershed, reduce streambank erosion, prevent sediment pollution, and enhance habitat. The project will also include the creation of walking paths, a boardwalk and seating area near the restored streams.

Future construction of the project(s) will be funded by American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Funding. For more information on funding for this project, visit the ARPA Infrastructure Projects website.

Public Meeting

We hosted a public meeting on October 4, 2023 to discuss the status of the Worthdale Park Stream Restoration & Stormwater Improvements Project. At this meeting, the City answered questions and solicited feedback on the design from the public.

Note: Construction is anticipated to last approximately 6 months and the park will remain open to visitors during construction.

Background

Worthdale Creek, East Creek, and West Creek connect and flow through Worthdale Park and continue to flow downstream to Walnut Creek. The three streams combined receive stormwater from approximately 175 acres of developed land, including impervious areas such as streets, rooftops, and parking lots. Impervious areas prevent stormwater from soaking into the ground and increases the amount of runoff and pollutants that reach the stream.

The Worthdale Park Stream Restoration and Stormwater Improvements Project will help improve water quality in Worthdale Creek, East Creek, and West Creek by stabilizing eroded streambanks, reducing stream flow, and enhancing aquatic and riparian habitat.
