Pedestrian Bridge Deck Improvements

A project focused on enhancing the safety and longevity of our trail structures along the Neuse River Trail and House Creek Trail. This initiative includes the replacement of timber decking on three key structures located at Neuse River Trail, Structure #202 at mile marker 2.75, Structure #237/238/239 at mile marker 11.50, and House Creek Trail, Structure #300 at mile marker 2.50. The existing timber decking will be upgraded to fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP), a lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and rot-resistant composite material. This upgrade will ensure a more durable and reliable trail experience for all users.

The consultant design team has completed the 100% design construction plans.

Construction

Structure #202, along the Neuse River Trail, is under construction. A trail detour is in place that travels through the Falls River community. Structure #300, along House Creek, will be under construction starting November 14, 2024. Structure #237/238/239, along the Neue River Trail,  is scheduled for construction in early January 2025.

History

The Capital Area Greenway System was first adopted by City Council in 1976. This plan proposed a system of linear parks located primarily along rivers, streams, and creeks, and included the opportunity for an interconnected system of pedestrian trails across the region.
