In honor of the Carolina Hurricanes making it to the playoffs for the first time in 10 years, the Raleigh City Council has proclaimed April 15 as Carolina Hurricanes Day.
The Carolina Hurricanes secured a place in the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs with a 3 - 1 win against the New Jersey Devils on April 4.
Raleigh and the greater Triangle area residents are encouraged to wear Hurricanes colors to work or school to show their love and support for the team. The Carolina Hurricanes first joined the National Hockey League in 1979 as the Hartford Whalers, but moved to Raleigh in 1997.
So far, they are the only North Carolina professional team to win a national championship - a Stanley Cup win over the Edmonton Oilers in 2006.
Mayor Nancy McFarlane issued the proclamation on April 10, 2019.
Proclamation
WHEREAS, the Carolina Hurricanes franchise first joined the National Hockey League 40 years ago, in 1979, as the Hartford Whalers; and,
WHEREAS, the franchise moved to Raleigh in 1997 and became known as the Carolina Hurricanes; and,
WHEREAS, the Carolina Hurricanes have enjoyed widespread support across the greater Raleigh and Triangle region for 22 years; and,
WHEREAS, the Carolina Hurricanes first advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2002; and,
WHEREAS, the Carolina Hurricanes are the only North Carolina professional team to win a national championship with their 2006 Stanley Cup win over the Edmonton Oilers; and,
WHEREAS, the Carolina Hurricanes secured a place in the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs with a 3-1 win against the New Jersey Devils on April 4; and, WHEREAS, in recognition of the team's first playoff game in Raleigh in 10 years, on Monday, April 15, residents and visitors in the greater Raleigh and Triangle region are encouraged to show their love and support of the team by wearing their Hurricanes colors to school and work.
NOW, THEREFORE, do I, Nancy Mcfarlane, Mayor of the City of Raleigh, North Carolina, do hereby proclaim Monday, April 15, 2019, in the City of Raleigh as CAROLINA HURRICANES DAY
