Karen Musgrave McDonald took the oath of office as City Attorney on Tuesday in front of her family, friends, colleagues, elected officials and others. The ceremony was held at the Council Chambers in the Raleigh Municipal Building, and it was followed by a reception. Justice (Ret.) Patricia Timmons- Goodson administered the oath.

Ms. McDonald was hired as the new Raleigh City Attorney after an extensive nationwide search. She is serving as legal advisor to the Mayor and Council, City staff, and various boards and commissions of the City of Raleigh and leading the office’s professional and administrative staff.

Ms. McDonald has extensive municipal legal experience. Before joining Raleigh, she served as chief legal officer for the City of Fayetteville. Fayetteville appointed her to that role in 2002, the first African American and first female in the role.

“I am excited for the opportunity to serve the City of Raleigh and to provide the legal guidance it needs as it builds on its reputation as one of the best places to live, work, and play,” Ms. McDonald said.
