Several trees lining a street

Expanding Raleigh's Urban Canopy

Raleigh is turning greener, one street at a time. Thanks to the Street Tree Equity Project, the City is planting 1,000 new street trees over three years with a focus on areas that have been historically under-served. As Raleigh’s trees grow, so does the City’s commitment to building a greener future for everyone.

Launched in 2023, the project began by planting 350 trees in schools, parks, and public spaces in neighborhoods southeast of downtown, an area that had been mapped as lacking sufficient street trees. In 2024, another 350 trees were planted, creating even more green spaces where residents can enjoy the benefits of nature—cooler temperatures, cleaner air, and safer streets. Today, over 1,000 trees have been planted and the pilot project was completed!
