Solar Program Helps Make Energy Bills More Affordable

Several Raleigh residents on a fixed income will receive rooftop solar systems.

Longtime Raleigh resident Wanda Statum often has monthly energy bills that are a high percentage of her fixed income.

That’s where solar energy comes into the picture.

Statum was one of several residents who qualified for a pilot program run by the City of Raleigh. As part of the Solarize the Triangle campaign, this pilot program is providing free rooftop solar systems for these homeowners.

This program supports the City's ongoing efforts to implement Raleigh’s Community Climate Action Plan with goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050; to address equity, environmental justice, and community health; and to build community resilience to the impacts of climate change. It will also lower the electricity bills of participating homeowners and renters by installing solar PV systems on their rooftops, among many other benefits.

Raleigh is working with the Central Pines Regional Council on this program and Yes Solar to do the installations.

Watch Statum talk about the program’s impact on her life in a new video!
