Raleigh Arts is pleased to announce the "plants, and birds, and rocks (and things)" exhibition will be displayed inside the Farmhouse at Horseshoe Farm Nature Preserve from Oct. 26 through Dec. 1. This exhibition was curated by Scott Hazard, a North Carolina-based artist, and the current City of Raleigh Artist in Residence for Nature Preserves.
plants, and birds, and rocks (and things)
The "plants, and birds, and rocks (and things)" exhibition features work by North Carolina artists Claire Alexandre, Annie Blazejack and Geddes Levenson, Chieko Murasugi, Julia Einstein, Janet Link, Marcus Dunn, Patrizia Ferreira, Pete Sack and Scott Hazard, and new works inspired by the Preserves by poets Lauren Hunter and Chris Tonelli. The Farmhouse exhibition is an expanded showcase of the 2024 Block Gallery exhibition of the same name.
The artists and poets in plants, and birds, and rocks (and things) explore the natural, cultivated, and dystopian aspects of our cultures, societies, histories, and landscapes in their diverse practices. For this exhibition, the artists were invited to create work about understanding, kinship, integration, and reciprocity with the natural world.
These new works highlight the sometimes under-noticed or unseen elements of the ecologies found at three City of Raleigh Nature Parks and Preserves. These spaces, the Annie Louise Wilkerson, MD Nature Preserve, Durant Nature Preserve and Horseshoe Farm Nature Preserve, are important refuges for plants, insects, fungi, and wildlife, along with residents and visitors.

Nature Preserves Artist In Residence Program
Artist Scott Hazard is currently the Artist in Residence for Nature Preserves. The City of Raleigh's parks system includes four nature preserves: Annie Louise Wilkerson, MD Nature Preserve Park, Durant Nature Preserve, and Horseshoe Farm Nature Preserve. Parks staff and directors would like to incorporate art elements that enhance the natural beauty of the parks and promote the mission of preserving wild flora and fauna.
